THE PALMS is the upper suite with all ammenities and plenty of extras! Sleeps up to 6. Finished in CountryStove white paint (Zen white). All of the original random plank pine floors have been refinished, with new rosewood hardwood in the master bedroom. Air conditioning, keyless entry and video security/alarm system.

Kitchen features include new stainless fridge side-by-side with through-the-door filtered water, ice cube/crushed ice dispenser, dishwasher, gas stove, open concept with sit-down bar overlooking living room.

Living room side has stand-up bar with stools, gas fireplace, 1,000W surround-sound audio system with idock, 50" plasma HDTV visible from all areas of the open concept suite except the 2nd bedrooom.

The master bedroom has ensuite sink and 6' vanity, and a 2-seater corner Jaccuzzi, exhaust fan, glass French doors with clear view of plasma TV from bed or Jaccuzzi.

2nd bedroom includes TV, 2 closets, optional ensuite bathroom entrance, bunk beds - one double with single on top.

3 outside seating areas; the upper heated private deck includes a gas barbeque, seating and table, garden setting terrace below with 2 chairs and a table, and also private meditation area just inside the white picket fence.

This is a 130 year old historic red brick duplex on one of the nicer streets in Port Dover, 2 blocks from the center of town, south of Main St. and about 4 blocks from the main public beach and 2 blocks from a lesser used, semi-private beach. Lots of parking and even secured indoor parking for 2 motorcycles. 2 quality bicycles are available (bring your own helmet).

All you ever wanted to know about Brugmansia, but didn't know who to ask!

If you currently own a Brugmansia (datura, moon flower, angels trumpet), congratulations! You own one of the worlds most fascinatingly beautiful, fragrant, fastest growing and easiest plants to care for.

Often purchased as a small 10" plant in the spring, these trees can easily grow to a height of 6 to 8 feet in one season. With proper conditions, and even without, you will watch it gain a foot or more of new growth each month. Keep indoors until the night temperatures stay above 5˚C and in the fall it can be left out until frost. If it warms up after that it can go back out. Likely it will still be covered in blooms and buds.

Potting and Drainage for Brugmansia

As this plant grows it should be put in a pot at least 1/3 of the plants size, or desired size, i.e. a 2 ft. wide pot for a 6ft. plant. The rule is, the bigger the better, the larger the pot the bigger the tree will be. I recommend a square or cylindrical shaped pot as the top of the plant can get quite large and if the bottom of the pot is too narrow it will tend to tip or blow over too easily.

VERY IMPORTANT. Drain holes should make up at least 25% of the bottom of the pot. A plastic pot is definitely best as it will be lighter, stronger and last a lot longer. It will also be easier to drill more and larger holes in the bottom. Usually 5 to 7 7/8 inch holes are best. It is a good idea to get a very strong pot that is about 24 to 28 inches across, this way you will probably never have to replace it. Crush enough pop cans to cover the bottom of the pot and the holes at least 3 layers deep.

Brugmansia Potting Mix

The soil! Unlike most other plants it is very hard to make it too rich. I have planted in almost every magical mixture, and they all seem to work, but the most reliable one I use is:

1 part manure, 2 parts soiless mix. For a large pot at least 3 cups of bone and blood meal.

When you first transplant it, soak it with transplant solution. You will need at least 1 1/2 gallons or 4 litres. Apply till the soil is soaked and it runs out the bottom. Never use a drip pan under the pot unless you have it indoors. Leave it till it dries out on the surface of the soil and then repeat as necessary with a solution of 20 20 20 fertilizer (or fish emulsion) at one third the manufacturer’s recommended rate.

This is one plant that is very hard to over-water.

Planting a Brugmansia in the ground

You can also plant your tree directly into the garden or as I often do, in the lawn. It is best to grow it to at least 2 ft. tall first.

Dig a hole as big as 2 ft. deep and across, remove the soil and place it in a wheelbarrow. Discard up to 1/2 and replace it with manure or compost. Now replace the soil and plant the tree. Stake it with a minimum 4 ft. length pole. If the soil is very poor, replace it altogether.

This tree needs very good drainage.

Growing and training a Brugmansia tree

These trees are at their best if you train them to between 4 and 6 ft. tall before you let them branch out. This is sometimes hard because you will have to cut off side shoots that may have buds on them, but if it branches out too soon it may never reach a suitable height. Constantly train your tree up a support such as a bamboo pole. Tie it to keep it as straight as possible. If a branch grows out of control in the wrong direction, just let the pot dry out a little more than usual and the branch will be come very flexible. Tie it up straight and then water. It will harden in its new position. The reason for growing it so tall is to appreciate the flower. It is best to have the blooms at eye level. If you let it branch out earlier it will still be quite beautiful but the blooms will be low and hard to see .You will also need a lot of space as they can get very wide. Six feet or more in one season is not unusual.

Brugmansia Blooms

If planted and fertilized properly you will get the odd bloom at any time, but sometimes not. Light, heat, drought, etc. can all affect the results. Usually a sunny or partially sunny location, well watered, good drainage and proper fertilizing will give good results. You will most likely get a small flush of blooms in June or July.

You can be quite impressed, and it will make all your efforts worthwhile however, the best is yet to come. As this flush finishes the next one will just be starting. If you look closely you will notice small buds that look like pickles. Usually on the second flush there will be 30 or more blooms. Three hundred or more is not unusual. The branches can become so heavy with blooms that they will droop down to the ground. After the buds first appear they will take about 2 to 3 weeks to open. The small pickle shaped bud will grow 5-7 inches during development. As opening day arrives the now long bean shaped pod will crack open at the bottom and you can see the flower starting to unravel over a period of a couple of days. It seems to take forever until you go out one morning and the tree is all of a sudden covered with blooms.

Brugmansia Colour

There are basically 4 different colours but 5 different types. A yellow, peach with a white throat, a single white, then a double white. A flower with a second flower emerging from the center of the first. There is also an orange with yellow streaks, however this one takes about 2 years to bloom and is the most difficult to grow.

Brugmansia Fragrance

Truly this is one of the most fragrant of all flowers. While the perfume is mild during the day, it will explode, pouring out in the late day or early evening and continuing into the night. This is truly the best time to enjoy your plant. Be sure to have it in a location were you sit by it in the evening. If you stay up late enough, you can actually witness the blooms opening. It will become more like a pet than a plant. Don’t be surprised if you become attached to it! Lots of people keep them for years, having parties when they bloom or just inviting friends over to see it in bloom.

This plant is of special interest not just to plant lovers but to all kinds of nature lovers. For the very patient observer, place a spotlight under your tree in late summer at night. Sit very still and if you're lucky enough you may spot a humming bird moth. Not only do you have the most fascinating tree but you also get to see one of nature’s truly special creatures. Most people have never heard of this moth let alone seen one. With the aid of a light and the irresistible fragrance of the flowers they will most likely come visiting. They are as large as a sparrow and as the name implies, flies like a humming bird. If you didn’t know better you’d wonder what a humming bird was doing at visiting at night, but if you move slowly from behind (as they are blind and fly by radar) you can get quite close . You can see it drink nectar from the throat of the flower as it moves from flower to flower, staying 30-60 seconds at each.

Winterizing your Brugmansia

As the winter comes, you will have to be prepared to bring in your tree or it will die. It may seem impossible to bring in such a big plant but it can be done quite easily a couple of different ways. If you intend to keep it growing in a sunny window or green room, you will have to contend with the size and removing any insects from the plant and soil. You may not see any but there are probably lots of eggs on the leaves and in the pot. If it is not treated before it comes in , there is a good chance you will be overrun with bugs before long.

First, trim your tree to make it easier to handle and also suit its new location. You can be quite brutal as it will grow right back. The more you trim it back the easier it will be to deal with. Letting the pot dry out will also make it a lot lighter and easier to move. While still outside, mix up at least 4 litres of diazinon and spray the leaves top and underside till it runs off. Pour the last litre or so into the soil. Now cover the plant with a large clear plastic bag and place it in the shade. Wait 5 to 10 days and repeat. If you don’t like using any insecticide, simply remove all the leaves, trim to suit (the more the better) and wash it well with soap and water. It should now be safe to bring it in. Be careful not to place it near other plants that may be infected.

Under good conditions it may bloom around Christmas time. The easiest option is to remove all the leaves, trim it right back to the first two "Y"s at the top, spray it for bugs (optional) and place it in cold storage. 40 to 50˚F or 5˚C is best and no light is needed. Water very sparingly, and the tree will go dormant until you bring it out in the spring.

That’s about it! Now grow it and show it!

Brugmansia Caution!

BEWARE! All beauty comes at a price. All parts of the brugmansia are poisonous! It is not poisonous to the touch, but definitely is if you eat it. I have been handling these trees almost every day for the past 4 years with absolutely no ill effects. However my cat once decided to take a bite out of a leaf. I immediately phoned the vet, who advised me not to worry however to be ready to clean up for the next few days! The cat recovered and I now make sure that in the house I keep the leaves out of reach. By the way, they really taste awful. If this worries you, you should be aware that many plants in many gardens are so. Rubber plants and Morning Glories are to name a few.

Datura

A simple plant to grow. It will reach 3 to 6 ft. in height and 6 or more in width. Can easily be contained to smaller gardens if you wish. Plants bloom early and continue blooming till frost. Flowers will produce seedpods and will self-seed or you can collect them and start earlier in March.

Emerald Ebony (Jacaranda mimosaefolia)

Very easy plant to grow. Can be grown indoors as a houseplant or out doors in partial to full shade. Can reach a height of 7 ft. in one summer. Produces clusters off lavender colored 2-in. long trumpet flowers usually in the second year. If brought inside in the fall before the frost flowers can appear by Christmas. The stake will grow straight up similar to bamboo with 2 branches emerging parallel to each other. Often mistaken as Sensitive plant because of the similar petals. The branches become covered in tiny little leaves, very much like a fern.

Jungle Banana (Musa Ensetie)

Jungle bananas are a wild variety of bananas that can reach a height of 8 feet or more in one season. If you are growing from seed, soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours. Then place seeds together in one pot or tray, covered in about 1 inch of soil. Bottom heat will speed germination. The top of the water heater or refrigerator is an ideal location. As soon as a shoot is visible, pluck it out with your fingers, be careful not to disturb the other seeds, then pot it up in a separate pot. Be patient! Although some seeds will germinate in just a few weeks, some seeds can take 6 months or more. Start with 6 in a pot and re-pot as necessary. This makes a great indoor plant and will grow 4ft or more in just a few months.

If you want to grow your plant outdoors, pick a spot, part sun and shade is best but it will usually do well in any location. Be sure the soil is very rich and well draining. Keep it well watered and fertilized. I would fertilize at least every week using 20-20-20 all purpose.

FLOWERING - It will most likely not flower outside, as our season is too short. However, inside blooming and fruit is possible, if you leave it undisturbed in a big pot with plenty of light. If it does bear fruit, it will die shortly after that and will reproduce babies by sending up shoots all around the outside. You can dig them up and start all over again!

Elephant Ears

A member of the Caladium family, this huge plant will grow 6ft. or higher in one season. The leaves can reach 40 inches or more across. Originally thought of as a pond or bog plant , it will do excellent in a partly shaded and well-watered location. It is very easy to grow from a bulb that looks similar to a large potato. Can also be grown as an indoor plant in a bright room or started in doors for your outside garden in March in northern climates. Grown for it’s attractive foliage of velvet texture that sheds water droplets like pearls. This plant is a must if you want to interest children in gardening.

Perennial Hibiscus

The show stopper in late summer in every garden. Just as most gardens are winding down in the north, this plant will come alive and be the life of the party. With its large blooms (up to 12 inches across) in colours of white with a pink centre, pink with a red center and solid burgundy, this plant looks like it's from Alice in Wonderland. Flowers appear on stems up to 7 ft. tall. Plant in the middle of the garden or near the back. The plant will most likely re-appear year after year with very little care.
